The Ministry of Transport has announced that it will request an additional eight billion baht to fund the Red Line electric train project.
Transport Minister Air Chief Marshal Prachin Chantong (ประจิน จั่นตอง) said yesterday that the budget would be used to expedite construction of the Red Line for 2017. The ministry is expected to request eight billion baht from the Cabinet. The move is part of a strategic plan to transform Bang Sue (บางซื่อ) Central Station into a rail transportation hub.
Air Chief Marshal Prachin revealed that the project has been coping with contractual disputes and greater-than-expected construction costs. The Red Line project has an estimated cost of 70 billion baht. He said the project would be completed on schedule with the use of better construction technology.
The Red Line train is scheduled for public operations in 2018. However, it is currently behind in its itinerary by 13.34 percent. The Transport Minister previously visited the construction site of the Red Line project to inspect its progress.
