Municipalities empowered to collect waste management fees

The cabinet has approved in principle the idea of charging households waste treatment fees. The scheme is expected to lead to recycling and waste sorting among Thai people.

Municipalities will be empowered to collect monthly service fees, which will be calculated by the amount of garbage a household disposes of per day. A charge of one baht per kilo of waste will be collected from each household.

The cabinet explained that the one baht per kilo rate was computed from the quantity of waste a family of five people is likely to throw away per month. It figured that each family member dumped one kilo of garbage per day. However, the cabinet said a household with fewer members would pay less than the standard rate or none.
