TAT: Bangkok will be up there again

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has voiced confidence that Bangkok will regain its status as the world’s top destination in 2015, due to the improving political situation.

Bangkok recently lost its World’s Best City title, which it held for four years, in a reader’s survey run by US magazine Travel + Leisure. Last week, the capital also lost its position as the world’s top destination city to London in the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Bangkok still came second in the index, retaining its leading position among Asia-Pacific cities, despite an estimated 11% decline in international visitors to 16.4 million this year.

TAT acknowledged that political unrest has taken a toll on Thailand’s tourism industry since the last quarter of 2013.

London is projected to be the world’s Number 1 destination city, with an estimated 18.7 million visitors this year. However, due to the assuming of power by the National Council for Peace and Order, along with its work to undo political conflict in the Kingdom, the tourism authority is optimistic that Bangkok will be able to attract larger numbers of visitors by next year.
