Bombs cut far South rail line near border

The Transport Minister has ordered that Southern train services terminate before Sungai Kolok station in Narathiwat province to ensure passenger safety in light of bomb attacks that damaged two railway bridges in the far south.

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) governor Prapas Chongsanguan (ประภัสร จงสงวน) explained yesterday that repairs to the rail are to be complete by the weekend.

However, transport minister Chadchart Sittipunt has said that care must be taken to assure the safety of the rail line.

He said the line will remain closed indefinitely until such assurances could be established.

The closure affects only three stations but effectively isolates Sungaikolok in terms of train travel.

Two bombs suspected of being planted by insurgents were set off early yesterday, halting 16 trains.

One bomb exploded at a railway bridge, while the other damaged a stretch less than 10 kilometers away.

The SRT pointed out the tracks were severely damaged by the incident.
