Govt promises free dentures for 3,000 elderly patients in South

About three thousand elderly people in the four southernmost border provinces of Narathiwat (นราธิวาส), Pattani (ปัตตานี), Yala (ยะลา) and Songkhla (สงขลา) will receive free dentures this year.

The giveaway is part of the Royal Dentures Project of the Ministry of Public Health’s Health Department, which normally provides about 30-thousand free dentures to those in need nationwide each year.

Deputy director-general of the Health Department, Dr. Theerapol Topanthanont (นพ.ธีรพล โตพันธานนท์), said the department had learned that many elderly people in the far South are suffering serious dental health problems.

Furthermore, he said about half of the elderly people with tooth decay are finding it difficult to travel to dental clinics and hospitals because of the ongoing violence in the region.

Dr Theerapol said dentists and dental staff from the Health Department would travel to the four provinces to distribute the free dentures to about three thousand elderly people.

He said the department would try to provide free dentures to a total of nine thousand elderly people in the deep South over the next two years.

It also plans to establish an elderly dental clinic in every primary care health unit.

He said local senior citizens’ groups are also being encouraged to promote dental health awareness
