Army chief visits South; intelligence warns of possible car bomb

BANGKOK, Feb 20 - Thailand's army chief left Bangkok today for the south to follow up military operations against the insurgency in the border...

Army Chief General Prayut Chan-O-cha (ประยุทธ จันทร์โอชา) this morning visited Pattani (ปัตตานี) province to follow up on the progress of the security operation in the region, following a violent attack on a military base yesterday.

The visit was being conducted amid a warning from an intelligence unit for residents in provinces of Songkhla (สงขลา), Pattani (ปัตตานี), Yala (ยะลา) and Narathiwat (นราธิวาส) to be on alert for possible car bomb attacks by the militants using an Isuzu pickup truck and a Proton sedan.

General Prayut, who was accompanied by advisor to the Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa (ยุทธศักดิ์ ศศิประภา), said the bombing, which resulted in 8 soldiers being wounded, was launched during a late afternoon soccer game, the time when it was least expected.

The incident was, however, recorded by a surveillance camera.

He added that security personnel in all violence-plagued areas have also been ordered to closely monitor the situation and to be more vigilant during on and off duty time.
