Energy ministry: Thailand will face energy crisis in April

(16/02/13) Energy Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisarn (พงษ์ศักดิ์ รักตพงษไพศาล) said that from April 4, Thailand may face a power supply crisis, which may result in the ministry having to declare an “energy emergency situation”.

Mr. Pongsak said with the damage to the Thai-Malaysian gas pipeline from an accident and the collapse of a Myanmar gas platform, Thailand’s gas supply will drop by 1.1 billion cubic feet per day.

Given that much of Thailand’s electricity is produced by gas, the gas supply shortage will mean a shortage in electricity.

The minister said his ministry would hold a meeting next week to discuss preparations for the upcoming crisis. He noted that households and organisations will have to limit their power use in order to prevent the country’s industries from grinding to a halt.

The ministry plans to ask Myanmar to postpone its pipeline maintenance to April 7 to 8, so as to make the maintenance days closer to the Songkran holidays, when there will be less demand for power.
