EC holds meeting for BKK Governor Election preparation

(17/01/13) The Election Commission (EC) today held a meeting in preparation for the registration of Bangkok gubernatorial candidates next Monday.

EC Chairperson Apichart Sukkhaganond (อภิชาต สุขัคคานนท์) today chaired a meeting of the local election committee members in order to prepare for the registration process of the Bangkok Governor election on January 21-25.

Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Prapan Naigowit (ประพันธ์ นัยโกวิท) reiterated that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) must train staff members at polling stations in order to prevent errors which can lead to future protests.

During the meeting, representatives from the BMA affirmed readiness for the registration process which will start next Monday at 8.30am. The BMA has initially set aside 177-million baht budget for the governor election, with 23-million baht for the poll’s publicity.

Each candidate has to pay a fee of 50-thousand baht for candidacy registration while the usual photography fee of 20-thousand baht has been cancelled. Each candidate’s profile and qualification will be thoroughly inspected during the process.

Meanwhile, Bangkok EC Chairperson Police Lieutenant General Thaweesak Tujinda (ทวีศักดิ์ ตู้จินดา) added that each candidate must submit names of potential deputy governors and secretaries with their approval to work with the candidate if elected. He warned that the submission must be made before the election date to avoid violating the election law.
